In 1673 Mexico, a family plays in a field, and the youngest son gives his mom a necklace. The kid closes his eyes quickly, and when he opens them, his family is missing. The kid finds his mom suffocating his sibling in a stream. Shocked, he runs away yet his mom catches him and seemingly drowns him as well. 

300 years later, in 1973 Los Angeles, Mexican caseworker Anna Tate-Garcia investigates the disappearance of customer Patricia Alvarez's two kids. Anna arrives at Patricia's house for a government assistance check. Inside, she finds the kids bolted behind an entryway, and Patricia attacks her and is removed by the police. Patricia's youngsters, brothers Carlos and Tomas, advise Anna to keep them in the room so they are ensured. Disregarding their warnings, she brings the boys to the police. 

At a youngster services shelter, Carlos and Tomas walk unfeelingly through the office until Tomas points to a mirror where the two boys see a lady clad in a white dress. The mirror cracks and the lady grabs Carlos. 

Anna is called to investigate the deaths of the boys, discovered suffocated in a waterway. Bringing her kids Chris and Sam, she tells them to stay in the vehicle while she investigates the homicide scene. She hears Patricia, accused of her sons' murders, screaming that it was Anna's flaw for taking her sons, and that Patricia had attempted to stop the malignant forces of the lady dressed in white, "La Llorona". 

Chris leaves the vehicle to investigate himself and is seized by La Llorona, leaving consume marks on his wrist. He rushes back to the vehicle, however La Llorona appears again and frightens him into shock. The following day, Sam is also gotten by the spirit, leaving indistinguishable consume marks on her arm. Anna interviews Patricia, who has a plausible excuse for the hour of her sons' deaths and tells her about La Llorona. Patricia reveals that in her scorn for Anna, she implored La Llorona to take Anna's youngsters and bring her own boys back. Anna encounters La Llorona when the spirit attempts to suffocate Sam in the bath. She saves Sam, and the ghost leaves consume marks on Anna's arm as well. The following morning, Anna seeks help from Father Perez, who relates the case to his previous experiences with a spooky porcelain doll. Perez turns to previous priest Rafael Olvera to dispose of the substance. Rafael arrives at Anna's house, setting up candles and different items to secure the family. In the night, La Llorona over and again attacks them and attempts to suffocate Anna and Sam in the pool. 

Patricia arrives, endeavoring to give Anna's kids to La Llorona in return for her own. Sam and Chris escape while Anna pleads with Patricia in the basement; Patricia comes to her senses and releases Anna, permitting her to support her kids. Chris delays La Llorona by showing her a necklace Anna removed from her, which makes La Llorona quickly assume her human appearance. Chris then unveils a mirror which takes La Llorona out of her human appearance and proceeds to assault the kids. Anna stabs her through the chest with a cross produced using a Fire Tree – trees that developed by the waterway where La Llorona suffocated her youngsters, the main 'witness' to her wrongdoing. The spirit is destroyed. 

Anna and her youngsters say thanks to Rafael for his assistance; as the kids run once again into the house, Anna sees what resembles a puddle of tears.

As of May 15, 2019, The Curse of La Llorona has grossed $52 million in the United States and Canada, and $62.2 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $114.2 million, against a production budget of $9 million.
In the United States and Canada, the film was projected was to gross $15–17 million from 3,372 theaters in its opening weekend. It made $11.8 million on its first day, including $2.75 million from Thursday night previews, and went on to over-perform, grossing $26.5 million in its opening weekend and topping the box office; 49% of the opening weekend audience was Hispanic. In its second weekend the film fell 69.5% to $8 million, finishing third.
